Geneva Police Crack Down on E-Bikes, E-Scooters
City of Geneva police have announced an increase in enforcement regarding the operation of e-bikes and e-scooters. The announcement comes amid ongoing local discussions about the rules and regulations surrounding these devices.
A new law that took effect in 2020 allows the operation of bicycles with electric assist and electric scooters on selected streets and highways in New York State. According to the information provided by the City of Geneva Police Department, an e-bike is defined as a bicycle with electric assist that is equipped with an electric motor powered by lithium batteries, includes operable pedals, and meets specific dimensions and power limits. In particular, an e-bike must be no more than 36 inches wide, have a motor up to 750 watts, and comply with requirements set by the New York State classes of E-Bikes and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
An electric scooter is described as any device weighing less than 100 pounds that has handlebars, a floorboard or seat for riding, and an electric motor powered by no more than 500 watts or human power, with a maximum speed of no more than 20 mph.
Local officers will continue to focus on the safe and legal operation of these vehicles as part of their efforts to enforce the rules.
