Fatal Four-Vehicle Crash Hits Bus at Stop
On Tuesday, December 16, at about 2:45 p.m., Greeley Police responded to a four-vehicle crash on the 4400 block of 10th Street. The incident involved a Greeley Evans Transit bus that was stopped at an authorized bus stop with its hazard lights on while loading and unloading passengers.
An 82-year-old man from Kersey, driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer, struck the rear of a GMC Yukon. The collision caused the Yukon to hit the bus. The Trailblazer was reportedly traveling too fast for conditions and following too closely, according to an early investigation.
The Trailblazer driver was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries on December 17. The 50-year-old driver of the Yukon and a 75-year-old passenger were also taken to a local hospital, but neither sustained injuries. A Nissan Altima, driven by a 65-year-old man, was struck by the Yukon and pushed aside; the man was uninjured.
The bus driver, a 60-year-old City of Greeley employee, suffered minor injuries. He was treated at a local hospital and released. No passengers on the bus were injured.
The Weld County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after next-of-kin has been notified. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Officer Chad Wegscheider at (970) 652-8232 or via email at Chad.Wegscheider@greeleypd.com.
The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
