Investigation under way after officer-involved shooting in Greeley

Greeley, Colo. — The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred today at approximately 9:20 a.m. in the 5700 block of 20th Street in Greeley.

At about 9:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of a suspicious male running with a knife. They located the individual, a 20-year-old man, running east on 20th Street from 59th Avenue. In an effort to ensure public safety, officers attempted to block the suspect’s path. The suspect brandished a knife and charged the officers, forcing them to discharge their weapons. A Greeley Police officer was injured during the encounter.

Officers attempted life-saving measures on the suspect before he was transported to a Greeley hospital, where he died.

Investigators determined that prior to the confrontation with police, the suspect had been at his grandparents’ home in the 5400 block of 24th Street. While there, the suspect allegedly stabbed his 22-year-old brother. The brother was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead from his injuries. The Greeley Police officer injured during the incident was transported to a hospital and released with minor injuries.
