Greeley Police Warn of Scammers Posing as Weld County Deputies.
GREELEY, Colo. — The Greeley Police Department reported a surge in reports this week of scammers impersonating Weld County Sheriff's Deputies. The fraudsters use high-pressure tactics to steal money from residents.
How to spot the scam
- Your caller ID may say "Weld County Sheriff" or show a local number. Don't trust it; scammers can fake this.
- They claim you have an active warrant (usually for missing jury duty or an unpaid fine).
- They tell you that you will be arrested immediately unless you pay a civil penalty to vacate the warrant.
- They will demand payment via untraceable methods, such as gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrencies or digital payment apps.
- They will attempt to keep you on the phone and discourage you from hanging up.
The truth and how to stay safe
- The Weld County Sheriff's Office (or any legitimate law enforcement agency) will NEVER call you to demand money over the phone.
- If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. The longer you stay on the line, the more they will pressure you.
- Do not share your address, bank information or social security number.
- If you are concerned that you do actually have a warrant, hang up and call the WSCO non-emergency line or the courts directly at a verified number.
Please share this post to help protect our neighbors, especially those who are most vulnerable, from these aggressive scammers.
