Brighton Fire Rescue responded to two fires overnight, according to the department.

At 8:55 p.m., crews were dispatched to a grass fire in the 1400 block of Goldeneye Lane. Firefighters arrived to find a small fire burning in dry vegetation beneath a tree. They extinguished the fire, overhauled the area, and checked for remaining hot spots.

The cause was determined to be a lightning strike. Firefighters said they observed burn marks extending from the base of the tree to the top above the fire area.

At 10:27 p.m., a crew responded to a reported dumpster fire at the Riverwalk Apartments. Firefighters found a fire involving the contents of a dumpster, up to three mattresses, a wooden bed frame leaning against the exterior of the dumpster enclosure, the wooden enclosure itself, and a tree directly above the fire.

Crews deployed a 1.75-inch attack line and quickly extinguished the fire, preventing further extension to nearby property.

Brighton Police Department was on scene and, with the assistance of an apartment complex representative, was reviewing security camera footage to determine whether the incident was captured on video.

The department also urged residents to report signs of lightning strikes, smoke, or fire after thunderstorms, saying lightning can ignite vegetation without being immediately noticed.
