Woman Arrested After Police Find Missing 3-Year-Old
Greeley Police said it responded on Monday, June 8, at about 6:20 p.m. to the Bears Village Apartments on 18th Street after reports that a 3-year-old girl was missing.
Police said the child’s mother reported the girl was last seen at about 4:30 p.m. playing at a nearby playground. Officers received video footage from residents showing what the girl was last wearing and her appearance before she disappeared.
Law enforcement deployed multiple resources to locate the girl, including a door-to-door search of the apartment complex, a Reverse 911 alert covering a five-mile radius, aerial support using a drone deployed by the Real Time Information Center, immediate social media broadcasts, deployment of the search-and-rescue K9 Onyx, and a mutual aid notification to the University of Northern Colorado Police Department.
At about 7:15 p.m., officers received a report from a citizen that the girl was seen walking in an alley near Cranford Place with an adult woman. Police said K9 Onyx responded to the alley and positively alerted to the missing child’s scent.
Officers searched the neighborhood after additional sightings were reported. At about 7:45 p.m., police said the child and the woman were located in the 1400 block of 15th Street.
Police identified the woman as 30-year-old Mariah Martinez. Officers said she was taken into custody without incident and transported to the police department, then booked into the Weld County Jail on charges of felony second-degree kidnapping and child abuse.
Police said the child was transported to a local hospital for a precautionary evaluation and later reunited with her family. The department credited citizens, community members, and media partners for sharing information that helped lead to the child’s safe return.
Greeley Police said the investigation is ongoing and that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The department said no further details would be released that day and urged anyone with contact information, video surveillance, or other helpful information to contact Detective Collin Losasso at Collin.Losasso@greeleypd.com or Detective Brett Stone at Brett.Stone@greeleypd.com.
