Parents and Teachers Demand Charter School Closures Halt
Staff Report /
Parents, staff, and members of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) are calling for the closure of seven Acero charter schools to be halted. The closure would impact approximately 2,000 students and 250 staff members across various neighborhoods including Gage Park, Brighton Park, Pilsen, Little Village, Rogers Park, Avondale, and Humboldt Park.
Rebecca Martinez, a campaign manager for the CTU, stated that Acero CEO Rich Rodriguez should reverse the decision to close the schools, or the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) must intervene to keep them open. The closure primarily affects a student population that includes over half who are English learners, 500 students with special education needs, and around 150 who are recent arrivals to the country.
On Wednesday afternoon, about 300 individuals, including parents, students, teachers, and CTU leaders, gathered to protest outside the Acero Schools headquarters. Many attendees expressed their frustration with Rodriguez and the Acero Schools board, with some parents demanding a financial audit and others calling for Rodriguez to resign. The situation continues to unfold as community members seek answers and action regarding the future of these schools.
